Honoring Our Heroes: The Story of Veterans Day

Honoring Our Heroes: The Story of Veterans Day

Veterans Day is a special day dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have served in the military. It is celebrated every year on November 11th to mark the end of World War I. This day is important because it gives us a chance to thank veterans for their service and sacrifices. By learning about Veterans Day, we can better appreciate the freedoms we enjoy and the people who have worked hard to protect them. Join us in recognizing these heroes and understanding why their contributions are vital to our nation’s history.

Facts About Veterans Day

Did you know that Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day? It was renamed in 1954 to honor all veterans, not just those who served in World War I.

Veterans Day vs. Memorial Day

While both days honor our military, they each have their own purpose.

Memorial Day is recognized on the last Monday in May. It’s dedicated to remembering and honoring those who have died while serving in our military.

Veterans Day is recognized every November 11th and honors all military  veterans, both living and deceased.

The First Veterans Day Parade

The first Veterans Day parade was held in Birmingham, Alabama on November 11, 1947.

It was organized by Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran.

Why November 11th?

November 11th was chosen because it was the day, in 1918, when World War I ended.

Veterans Day Traditions

In addition to organizing parades, many individuals express their gratitude by writing thank-you letters or visiting veterans’ homes.

National ceremonies are held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. During large gatherings, there will typically be a moment of silence in tribute to Veterans.

On a local level, we conduct ceremonies at the Timber Linn Veterans Memorial and host special breakfast and lunch events to personally show our appreciation to those who have served.
